Foundation Nutrition Symposiums

The Emerging Role of Lutein Across the Life Span

This program will enhance your knowledge and awareness of the importance of lutein during critical times of the life cycle including infancy and older adulthood. Lutein is of particular benefit during the vital time of brain and eye development as well as for the older adult population at risk for eye disease. Practical ways to incorporate lutein in the diet of infants and adults will also be reviewed.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define the role of lutein in the development and function of the eye
  2. Examine emerging research on the brain/eye connection with implications for clinical practice
  3. Report on current lutein research and related benefits of lutein in the aging population

The Family Meal: Reclaiming the Dinner Table

This program will provide a better understanding of the many and diverse benefits of the family dinner and those factors that may threaten family nutrition and health. The goal is to explore this complex issue from all angles - from social epidemiology to the history of dining together in the US, to innovative culinary techniques and practice.

Presentations will summarize the published evidence base on the benefits of the family dinner – from better nutrition and health to improved self efficacy and academic performance. Topics will give a general overview of research in this topic area, report new findings regarding epidemiological aspects of the Family Meal, account for the social trends that inhibit family dining, and explore the avenues in which promoting the Family Meal can be achieved. A question and answer session will follow presentations and a panel discussion will conclude the symposium.

After attending this session, registrants will be able to:

  • Understand the key elements necessary to create a healthy and rewarding family dinner.
  • Exemplify how new research techniques can be used in regards to understanding the American family diet.
  • Provide useful tools and guidelines to help families reclaim dinner in the home.
  • Enhance understanding of the evolution of eating behaviors in today’s society and ignite ideas for practical approaches in the future.

Williams, Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, who received core training through Athlete's Performance. Robert holds an MS degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotion from California University of Pennsylvania. He is currently the Head Strength & Conditioning Trainer at the Abbott Nutrition Human Performance Center, and was formerly an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach for The Ohio State University. Robert's "old school" philosophy of fundamental movement based fitness with the task of improving joint mobility, core stability, total body strength and power and cardiovascular endurance will be blended into 45 minutes of dynamic movement in a high energy atmosphere.

The registration fee is $20 for one session and $30 for two.
